Tarzan

Johan Lorbeer, 2010

In Tarzan, artist Johan Lorbeer astonished visitors in the center of Nieuwegein by seemingly defying gravity. He appeared to lean casually against a wall — four meters above the ground. His still-life performance, in which he floated like a modern illusionist, captivated passersby for hours. The performance took place on September 4, 2010, in collaboration with Mothership, commissioned by the Municipality of Nieuwegein and the Province of Utrecht, with thanks to Theater De Kom. Mothership acted as curator and coordinated the project.

Lorbeer is internationally renowned for his still performances that evoke a sense of magical realism, consistently playing with our perception of reality and physics. Tarzan is a striking example of his oeuvre, in which he achieves maximum wonder with minimal means.
