Hoorn Des Overvloeds
When construction of the Markthal in Rotterdam began in 2009, the ambition was clear: it had to become more than just a functional building. Architecture firm MVRDV and developer Provast wanted to create an icon — and enlisted Mothership to develop a spectacular ceiling artwork that would give the building an unforgettable identity.
Mothership was responsible for the full concept development, execution, and project management. The idea: a monumental artwork that would not only draw visitors inside but also encourage them to stay longer — boosting both vibrancy and revenue within the building. Mothership proposed several artists and guided the selection process, which ultimately led to the choice of Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam to create the artwork.
Their creation, Horn of Plenty — an 11,000 m² digital artwork now known as the “Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam” — was produced in close collaboration with international experts and installed on the ceiling using cutting-edge sublimation technology.
The result: a breathtaking visual experience that drew global attention and transformed the Markthal into a major tourist hotspot. Thanks to Mothership’s expertise in concept development, execution, and project management, the artwork evolved into a PR powerhouse that strengthens the city’s identity and attracts millions of visitors each year — a prime example of how art, when strategically implemented, can generate both economic and cultural impact.
