Façade Artwork Feadship

Rod Quin & Maartje Roos

Commissioned by the Municipality of Makkum, Mothership developed a proposal for an iconic façade artwork for the new production hall in Makkum. The design draws inspiration from the region’s rich local history, with a visual nod to the ceramic tradition of Koninklijke Tichelaar and the maritime heritage of the area. By translating these elements into a contemporary visual language, the façade gains a distinctive identity that reflects both Makkum’s character and Feadship’s spirit of innovation.

The artwork is created using a special perforation technique developed by Rod Quin, which allows images to be integrated into the façade in a subtle and refined way. This technique gives the building a layered appearance both by day and by night, allowing the façade to speak as a tribute to heritage and craftsmanship.

For the artistic concept, Mothership collaborated with photographer and artist Maartje Roos, known for her work at the intersection of nature, history, and culture. Her contribution adds a deeply narrative layer to the design, visually uniting the themes of landscape, craftsmanship, and maritime tradition.

Mothership envisions the façade artwork not as a standalone object, but as a catalyst for pride, experience, and connection with its surroundings. The iconic nature of the design enhances Makkum’s visibility and reinforces the story of innovation rooted in tradition. The artwork is intended to become a new landmark — a visual anchor embraced locally and admired both nationally and internationally.
