Stick Up Nieuwegein
In a playful and slightly anarchic nod to old forms of public shaming, visitors to the Wereld van de Witte de With art festival in 2009 were given the opportunity to literally put friends and foes on display. Using colorful gaffer tape, people stuck each other onto mobile walls, which were then rolled through the street like cheerful, modern-day pillories.
This interactive performance, titled Stick Up, was presented in Nieuwegein as part of a series of public space art interventions. The project invited reflection on modern forms of public shaming — such as those found on social media — but did so in a playful context that mostly led to laughter, surprise, and spontaneous participation.
Mothership developed the concept, guided the participation process, and was responsible for the execution and coordination of the project.
