Spot On!
To mark the 10th anniversary of the Stichting Brugwachtershuisjes, twelve former bridge keeper’s houses across the Netherlands were temporarily transformed with a special line of poetry and a light installation. The project, titled SPOT ON!, ran from November 2022 through January 2023, with each house illuminated for up to two months.
The Stichting Brugwachtershuisjes commissioned Mothership to execute and coordinate the project. Light artist Marco Broeders designed a concept in which the bridge keeper’s houses functioned like slides within their surroundings. Their windows were covered with transparent, colorful films — each location featuring its own unique palette inspired by day and night, horizons, water, sky, and the urban environment.
The participating bridge keeper’s houses were located in Zwolle, Apeldoorn, Leeuwarden, The Hague, Haarlem, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Den Bosch, Maastricht, Almere, Middelburg, and Groningen.
Since 2012, the Stichting Brugwachtershuisjes has been dedicated to repurposing vacant bridge keeper’s houses — nearly 100 of which have since found a new function. With SPOT ON!, the project not only drew attention to the preservation of these remarkable structures but also highlighted their cultural and historical significance.
