Busstation Almere
The preliminary design for Almere’s bus station, developed by artist Peeta, is part of the overarching theme Almere Zeegroen — an art and spatial program that reconnects Almere with its origins as a city shaped by water, air, and land. Within this theme, movement, layering, and connection take center stage — elements that come together poetically in the design.
Peeta’s proposal translates the forces of wind and water into a series of fluid, wave-like patterns that turn the bus station’s ceiling into a visually dynamic artwork. The forms seem to move, symbolizing the continuous transformation of Almere — a young city built on the threshold between nature and technology.
The design was developed through parametric design — a digital method in which data such as wind speeds or passenger flows determine the composition. The patterns are most intense above the waiting areas and gradually fade toward the bus lanes, achieving both aesthetic and functional harmony.
There are two possible implementation options: a hand-painted mural by Peeta himself, or a digitally produced pattern printed on a specialized ceiling material. Both approaches offer a unique visual experience in which the traveler’s perspective and movement become an active part of the artwork — particularly through the use of anamorphic distortions that shift depending on the viewer’s position.
With this design, the bus station gains a distinctive character that seamlessly aligns with the vision of Almere Zeegroen: art that not only adorns, but connects, imagines, and adds meaning to the act of everyday travel. A powerful gesture of beauty, rhythm, and urban identity.
