Zonneweide Terheijden

Mothership

The Zonneweide Terheijden is a conceptual solar park developed by Mothership on behalf of the municipality of Drimmelen. The plan focuses on creating a solar park in the Brabant village of Terheijden, located between the Mark Canal and the River Mark. Mothership enriched the idea with functions that extend beyond energy production, envisioning an integrated site where sustainable energy, nature, agriculture, and public experience converge.

The design is inspired by the quadrilateral shapes of historic fortifications, such as the nearby Spinolaschans and Kleine Schans. This distinctive geometry forms the foundation of the site’s layout, making the solar park not only functional but also visually connected to the region’s history. The solar panels are elevated on stilts, allowing the land beneath them to be used for other purposes.

The solar meadow consists of three layers. In the energy layer, clusters of solar panels generate renewable power, surrounded by a water feature that highlights the fortification shape while adding ecological value. The agricultural layer makes use of the space beneath for animal-friendly poultry farming with chickens, ducks, and geese. In the public layer, the site is opened to visitors, featuring walking trails, birdwatching points, and a farm shop with a café, where regional products are sold and information is provided about renewable energy and local history.

With this concept, Mothership creates an innovative, multi-layered site that bridges past and future, linking the energy transition to experience and awareness. The Zonneweide Terheijden thus serves as an inspiring example of multifunctional energy projects in the Netherlands and beyond.
