Yggdrasil
In 2013, artist Gabriel Lester realized the interactive artwork Yggdrasil on the square in front of the Cultural Center in Oudewater. Named after the mythical tree of life from Norse mythology, the work consists of a series of periscopes that appear to grow organically from the ground like branches of a tree. These sculptural forms invite passersby to view their surroundings from a new, elevated perspective. The installation particularly engages young people, sparking curiosity, play, and wonder. At night, Yggdrasil catches and reflects the surrounding light, making the artwork literally glow. It is an ode to perspective and imagination, showing in a playful way how art can bring public space to life. Mothership executed the project and supervised the participation process on behalf of the Oudewater Art Committee.
