Taneda’s Coolsingel Cube

Yohei Taneda, 2010

In the heart of Rotterdam, Japanese production designer Yohei Taneda transformed the iconic Monisima Cube into a temporary film set titled Taneda’s Coolsingel Cube. With his signature attention to detail, Taneda designed both the façade and the interior of the cube, creating an enchanting space that immersed visitors in a poetic, cinematic experience. The project brought Taneda’s distinctive aesthetic — known from films such as Kill Bill and Memoirs of a Geisha — to the center of Rotterdam, introducing a touch of Japanese film culture into the public realm.

The installation was commissioned by Sculpture International Rotterdam and produced by Mothership. During the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Cube served as a striking urban intervention. Co2RO created the lighting design, which brought the artwork to life at night and heightened its sense of wonder. Mothership acted as curator, project manager, and producer of the project.
