Stop, Hummertime!
During the Wereld van de Witte de With festival in 2008, artist collectives Lastplak and Snodevormgevers presented their joint project “Stop, Hummertime!”. In this striking installation, they poked fun at the Hummer — the ultimate symbol of overconsumption and pollution — by creating an oversized replica made entirely out of cardboard.
The cardboard Hummer — one and a half times larger than the original — was painted live on-site by the street art collective Lastplak, in a bold, MTV-inspired style. By translating the SUV’s rugged image into a fragile, temporary material and then visually overloading it, the artists delivered a playful yet powerful commentary on the hypocrisy surrounding our approach to sustainability.
“Stop, Hummertime!” served as a temporary monument to an era in which mobility and status were seen as symbols of freedom — while simultaneously burdening the planet. The timing was striking: in the very same year, General Motors announced the end of Hummer production, making the installation almost prophetic in its message.
Mothership executed the project on behalf of ‘September in Rotterdam’ (Rotterdam Festivals).
