Schwarzwald / Metal Heart IV

Arno Coenen, Hans van Bentem, Kid Goesting, Iris Roskam, Alexander Krone, ROYALSTEEZ, Peter Leeuwerink, Martyn F. Overweel en Michael Markwick, 2010

A Gesamtkunstwerk with a raw edge. Schwarzwald / Metal Heart IV, curated by Arno Coenen, opened at Kunstvlaai 2010 with an explosive mix of performances and live acts — all inspired by heavy metal music. The exhibition explored how the dark symbolism of the forest could be expressed in diverse and often contradictory ways: through painting, sculpture, video, photography, collage, performance, storytelling, opera, electro, and of course, metal.

For the opening, Arno Coenen brewed his own beer and presented it in a devilish pentagram — an homage to Jos Houweling, founder of the Kunstvlaai and director of the Sandberg Institute. The beer, brewed by Coenen’s own Eurotrash Brewery, was served on-site, allowing the artwork to quite literally dissolve before the audience’s eyes.
