Ripples of Change
Ripples of Change is a floating artwork made of solar panels arranged in the shape of a concentric wave, designed for the Rijnhaven in Rotterdam. An initiative by Mothership, the project demonstrates how sustainability can be not only functional but also poetic and visible. The installation consists of solar panels mounted on floating elements made from recycled plastic, forming a visual metaphor: like a stone creating ripples in water, the work aims to spark a movement toward a more sustainable future.
In the evening, the solar field transforms into a light installation: the panels emit a soft glow from below, creating a serene, undulating spectacle visible from the quays. The work complements other iconic floating projects in the Rijnhaven — such as the Floating Pavilion and the Bobbing Forest — further establishing Rotterdam as a showcase for sustainable innovation.
Ripples of Change goes beyond symbolism: it actively generates solar energy while contributing to the city’s aesthetics and identity. As a temporary, movable structure, it can adapt to the ongoing development of the harbor area and be relocated when needed. In this way, the artwork is not only a tribute to the power of water and sunlight but also a tangible call for change — with every ripple serving as a spark for awareness.
