Quintet

Maze de Boer, 2012

Quintet is a monumental artwork by Maze de Boer, consisting of five imposing replicas of the iconic Shure 55 Unidyne microphone from the 1930s. Each microphone stands seven meters tall and is crafted from aluminum and stainless steel. They are installed around a roundabout at Schietbaan/Mozartweg in the new residential district of Mortiere in Middelburg.

The artwork is an ode to the music of the blues and jazz era, with the neighborhood itself serving as inspiration. Mortiere was designed with charming 1930s-style architecture, and its street names pay tribute to the musical greats of that period. Quintet serves as both a visual and thematic gateway to the district, evoking the atmosphere of bygone musical times within a modern urban setting.

The commission was issued by SBKM – De Vleeshal as part of the “Art in the Neighborhoods” program. Mothership coordinated the project and oversaw both the community participation process and the execution.
