Ponton Boulevard

Mothership, 2022

Almere, built on reclaimed seabed, is gradually expanding around the Weerwater — a centrally located lake that is gaining increasing importance for the city. The Esplanade now features a beach with a vibrant pavilion, inspired by the waterfront developments of other European cities.

Mothership initiated the following concept: a 180-meter-long floating boulevard on the Weerwater, made of sustainable pontoons with a surrounding walkway. For three weeks, this boulevard offered visitors a unique way to experience the city from the water. Afterward, the pontoons and cladding were reused. In addition to concept development, Mothership was responsible for the project’s execution, design, and coordination.

At the end of the pier stood Nieuw Flevo Peil, a water artwork by Meike Justine Ziegler, developed in collaboration with the future Museum M. This interactive installation featured a fountain that pulsed water upward in sync with the heartbeats of Almere residents, inspired by the question: “What makes your heart beat faster?”
