Pilot Projects #2
During the Wereld van de Witte de With festival in 2008, Onno Poiesz presented his striking installation “Pilot Projects #2.” In this sculptural intervention, a white-painted airplane was suspended vertically in public space — a modern monument inviting reflection on sustainability, religion, and our role in both the present and the past.
The airplane — a symbol of freedom, speed, and globalization — was stripped of its function by being positioned vertically. This transformation gave it an almost sacred presence: a contemporary cross inviting contemplation, or even forgiveness, for the ecological sins of modern mobility. Poiesz linked this image to the current practice of CO₂ compensation, in which trees are planted to offset air travel — a modern-day form of indulgence.
“Pilot Projects #2” was a striking presence within the festival’s “Green” theme, which centered on questions of sustainability and awareness. Mothership curated and coordinated the artwork, which was produced in collaboration with September in Rotterdam (Rotterdam Festivals).
