Ome Jan

Arno Coenen, 2007

The project Ome Jan by artist Arno Coenen is not just a colorful mosaic in the public space of Hoogvliet, but also a socially engaged artwork with a strong local foundation. It serves as a tribute to a remarkable neighborhood figure — Ome Jan — who dedicated many years to supporting the youth of Hoogvliet. He was not only a familiar face but also the driving force behind the boxing school Opboksen, where he helped young people build structure, confidence, and purpose.

Opboksen acted as a safe haven for many youths — a place where they didn’t just learn to box but also received lessons in respect, discipline, and perseverance. Ome Jan used sport as a means to keep young people on the right path and to help them discover their potential.

The creation of Ome Jan involved active participation from local residents. During the installation of the mosaic, community members were invited to contribute, fostering a strong sense of ownership and connection. The result is a monument that not only honors a single individual but also reflects the collective strength and identity of the community.

Mothership oversaw the participation process and acted as curator, coordinator, and producer of the project.
