Maasterras Shelter

Mothership

For the Municipality of Dordrecht, we developed a concept for the transformation of the Maasterras: the Maasterras Shelter. This is a future-oriented placemaking concept for the Dordrecht Spoorzone, created by Mothership and Re:publiek on behalf of the Municipality of Dordrecht.
The starting point of the concept lies in the idea of a shelter location. Imagine a place you go when the rivers overflow—a place where rising water is not a threat, but the beginning of something new. That is Maasterras Shelter: a visionary meeting place along the Dordrecht Spoorzone, developed by Mothership and Re:publiek for the Municipality of Dordrecht.

Maasterras Shelter is designed as a safe haven in a future where climate change is part of daily reality. The concept is set in the year 2084—but it’s being built now. Here, everything comes together: floating terraces, experimental hospitality, space for art, dialogue, and collaboration. It’s a place that offers not only shelter, but also new perspectives.

The Shelter functions as a temporary landmark and meeting place, inspired by a future in which the effects of climate change are part of everyday life. Imagine a community that lives with the water—where homes are built on stilts, food is grown in hanging gardens, and algae are on the menu. Hospitality, art, and events shape a place where learning, experimentation, and togetherness take center stage.

The Maasterras Shelter offers space for meeting, reflection, and imagination — a laboratory for new ways of living, right in the heart of Dordrecht.
