Loading Ready Run

Geert Mul, 2009

For the Las Palmas building in Rotterdam, artist Geert Mul developed the interactive installation Loading Ready Run in collaboration with Maurer United Architects. The work was specially designed for the former gatehouse of this industrial monument on the Wilhelminapier.

The artwork is both visible from the outside and interactive for visitors. Using sensors and mirrors, digital images—uploaded by passersby and visitors—are transformed into an ever-changing visual composition. The installation analyzes the characteristics of the uploaded photos (such as color, composition, and structure) and groups them into dynamic clusters. These are displayed on four monitors and reflected by mirrors, creating a kaleidoscopic effect.

Visitors can upload their own photos to the installation by inserting a memory card from their digital camera into the interface. Movement around the installation affects the imagery, creating an intuitive connection between viewer and artwork. In this way, Loading Ready Run playfully mirrors contemporary visual culture while also serving as a visual representation of the three cultural institutions housed in Las Palmas: the Nederlands Fotomuseum, LPII, and SKVR.

The installation was curated and coordinated by Mothership, commissioned by CBK Rotterdam, in collaboration with LPII, the Nederlands Fotomuseum, and BeeldFabriek.
