Kutkoks

Melle Smets & Hans Jungerius, 2006

During the Wereld van de Witte de With festival in 2006, artists Melle Smets and Hans Jungerius introduced the project Kutkoks. From a modest snack stand, they served culinary creations made entirely from instant and ready-made ingredients. Think cup-a-soup haute cuisine or microwave meals with flair — fast food with a conceptual twist.

With Kutkoks, the artists delivered a flavorful — and slightly sarcastic — critique of contemporary food culture, where convenience and speed often outweigh taste or nutrition. At the same time, they played with the idea of the artist as a “tastemaker,” both literally and figuratively. Visitors could grab a sandwich at the stand and, in doing so, take part in a dining experience that raised more questions than it answered.

The project was presented during the festival as part of “September in Rotterdam”, commissioned by Rotterdam Festivals. Mothership was responsible for the curation and coordination.
