Kunstwerk-Almere
Kunstwerk-Almere is a light installation by Geert Mul that poetically visualizes the unique origin of Almere as a city built on the former seabed. The work brings to life the deep connection between Almere and the water, as a dreamy, almost surreal vision. Is this the sea from which Almere emerged? Or a glimpse of a future where city and nature once again merge? The artwork offers no definitive answers but instead invites wonder, reflection, and a renewed appreciation of the urban landscape.
The artwork is part of De Zeegroene Loper, a vision by Mothership to green and enrich the area between Almere Centrum station and the Weerwater with meaningful art. Almere, with its relatively young and stony city center, was in need of softness — and that is precisely where the strength of this light artwork lies. Here, it’s not the bricks that take center stage, but the experience itself.
Mothership was responsible for concept development, design, execution, and full project management. In close collaboration with Geert Mul and the Municipality of Almere, Mothership created a work that literally and figuratively illuminates the city — a contemporary beacon that embodies the DNA of Almere and contributes to a city where you don’t just live, but also dream.
