Krans om Zadkine

Mothership, 2010

To commemorate the bombing of Rotterdam on May 14, 1940 — exactly 70 years later — Ossip Zadkine’s iconic sculpture De Verwoeste Stad (The Destroyed City) was illuminated in a striking way. Mothership installed eight powerful light beams of 7,500 watts each around the sculpture, forming a symbolic halo of light.

De Krans om Zadkine offered the iconic sculpture both a literal and symbolic new perspective. The powerful beams of light formed a serene yet striking tribute to the city’s destruction — and its rebirth. It was a modest, visual monument that connected Rotterdam with its past, speaking not through words, but through light.

Mothership developed the concept and design and was responsible for project management and execution. The project took place at Plein 1940 and was produced on behalf of the Municipality of Rotterdam.
