Kraanvogel

Motherhip, 2022

During the World Port Days 2022, Mothership created a powerful and poetic image along the Rotterdam skyline: De Kraanvogel (The Crane). This temporary artwork, designed and produced by Mothership, rose as a radiant symbol of hope, resilience, and connection — embodying the very spirit of the port city.

Inspired by the Japanese legend that a thousand folded cranes can make a wish come true, Mothership chose this iconic bird as a carrier of meaning. On a floating platform in the river Maas, a monumental illuminated crane appeared — serene and majestic — serving as a contemporary torchbearer of hope in turbulent times.

Mothership developed the concept, designed the artwork, and oversaw the complete production and project coordination. The result: an impressive beacon that brought residents and visitors together — inspiring wonder and once again proving that art belongs at the heart of society — even, or perhaps especially, on the water.
