Koningsdag Doetinchem

2025

For King’s Day in Doetinchem, Mothership collaborated with city policymakers and the dedicated King’s Day team on the theme “Tradition and Innovation.” The Achterhoek region is not only rich in traditions but also ranks remarkably high in the number of patents — just behind Eindhoven and Delft. The traditional koningsschieten (king’s shooting) event was linked to contemporary technology: wooden birds, normally handcrafted, were now designed using AI. Other visual elements throughout the city, such as decorations and flags, were also co-created with the help of AI.

The royal route passed through a street specially transformed into a coulisse landscape, designed by Mothership’s “green” partner Nico Wissing. This temporary transformation of what was once called “the ugliest street in Doetinchem” made a lasting impression — even on King Willem-Alexander, who remarked that he would gladly walk the route again.

Mothership was responsible for the concept development and advised the organizing committee throughout the preparation phase.
