Indicator

Geert Mul, 2007

The artwork “Indicator” by Geert Mul is a digital installation created in 2007 for the CFI Building (Central Financial Institutions) in Zoetermeer, part of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). This remarkable work visualizes the organization’s digital activity through four screens, each displaying data over a different timeframe: hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly.

The data are not displayed as graphs or numbers, but in the form of digital plants. The more digital activity there is, the more the plants grow. Each timeframe has its own style and rhythm: the hourly view is fast and dynamic, while the monthly view presents a slower, more stylized overview. In this way, the abstract world of network activity is transformed into a poetic and almost organic image.

In this work, Geert Mul combines his fascination with technology, data, and visual poetry. Indicator functions as a living barometer of the organization, making the invisible visible in a surprisingly organic way.

The project was commissioned by the Chief Government Architect of the Netherlands and was coordinated and produced by Mothership.
