Hub Holendrecht
With Hub Holendrecht, artist Arno Coenen created a colorful and monumental mosaic that quite literally lies within the city. This artwork, composed of a mosaic made from paving tiles, was installed in 2013 in Amsterdam-Zuidoost and marks a central location in the Holendrecht neighborhood. The piece is part of the area’s broader redevelopment and serves as both a visual and symbolic meeting place for residents.
Coenen, known for his expressive style and rich visual language, used paving tiles as the canvas for a pattern that reflects cultural diversity, connection, and urban dynamism. The work was designed to make an aesthetic impact not only from above — for instance, when viewed via Google Earth — but also to feel inviting and recognizable at street level.
Mothership coordinated the project and the participation process — from curation to execution. The project was produced in close collaboration with the Municipality of Amsterdam and local stakeholders. Hub Holendrecht demonstrates how art at the neighborhood level can serve not only an aesthetic purpose but also strengthen pride, identity, and a sense of community.
