Het Binnenhof – From Construction Site to Tourist Attraction

Mothership & Studio MAUC

The concept Het Binnenhof – From Construction Site to Tourist Attraction is an ambitious proposal developed by Mothership, aiming to turn the large-scale renovation of the Binnenhof (2020–2026) into not just a necessary construction project, but also a touristic and cultural opportunity of national significance.

At the heart of the proposal lies the transformation of the temporary construction site surrounding the Binnenhof in The Hague into a vibrant, dynamic destination. The plan includes the creation of an iconic pavilion on the Hofvijver, designed in collaboration with Studio Mauc and Marcel Wanders, serving as an information center, exhibition space, event venue, and VIP reception area. This pavilion combines royal grandeur with a contemporary aesthetic and functions as a temporary substitute for the Binnenhof’s representative spaces.

Additionally, the concept includes a bridge with a viewing platform overlooking the renovation, an ice rink and urban beach alternating each year, an exclusive terrace on the small island in the Hofvijver, and an artistically designed scaffolding structure. The entire plan is visually cohesive and elegantly executed, with opportunities for city dressing throughout the historic center.

The proposal goes beyond physical design elements, offering a comprehensive multi-year program with annually changing themes focused on democracy, landscape, sports, society, food, and innovation. These themes would be translated into exhibitions, events, and educational programs aimed at both tourists and residents.

The plan is conceived as both a public attraction and a PR instrument, designed to turn the potential negative impact of the renovation into positive visibility for The Hague and the Netherlands. The concept calls for courage, collaboration, and further development to reach realization — but holds the potential to create a unique added value both during and after the renovation period.
