Global Squares, Local Stars

Geert Mul, 2006

Global Squares, Local Stars is an interactive audiovisual installation by media artist Geert Mul. The project was specially developed for IVAM (Institut Valencià d’Art Modern) in Valencia and visualizes the complex social networks surrounding the famous football club Valencia CF. In his distinctive style, Mul created a digital mosaic of portraits — players, coaches, managers, former members, supporters, football wives, and young talents dreaming of a professional career. All were captured and together form the beating heart of the work.

The portraits move within a continuous film projection that references Valencia’s traditional tile patterns. This cultural nod bridges past and present, linking local identity with the club’s global impact. The installation spans an impressive 9 by 5 meters and uses custom-developed software by Carlo Prelz, enabling the images to merge and dissolve in a smooth, almost organic way.

Global Squares, Local Stars explores themes of community, fame, and the personal dreams interwoven with the grand narratives of sport and culture. By immersing the audience in a visual flow of faces and stories, Mul reveals how local engagement and global recognition can strengthen one another.
