Enter Rembrandtpark
Since 2013, an impressive mosaic artwork has marked the entrance to Amsterdam’s Rembrandtpark: Enter Rembrandtpark, designed by artist Arno Coenen. The artwork transforms a concrete gateway into a colorful, symbolic entrance to nature. In his signature baroque visual language, Coenen weaves together elements of religion, folklore, popular culture, and video games, creating a digital temple filled with references and visual richness.
What makes Enter Rembrandtpark special is that it is not only an artwork for the neighborhood, but also by the neighborhood. The mosaic was created as a participatory project: local residents actively helped lay the thousands of tiles that form the monumental image. Working together on this artwork gave the community a literal hand in beautifying their surroundings and strengthened their connection to the park.
This project is a powerful example of how art can not only transform public space but also bring communities together — piece by piece. Mothership organized the participation process and acted as curator and producer, commissioned by the Municipality of Amsterdam.
