Een dag in het liesveld park
On the weekend of November 25 and 26, 2023, the Liesveld Viaduct in Vlaardingen was temporarily transformed into a green urban park. What is normally just a passageway became, for a moment, a place to linger — offering an inspiring glimpse into the possible future of the planned Liesveld Park.
Mothership was the initiator and responsible for the concept development, community engagement, execution, project management, and curation of this temporary park. By allowing residents to literally experience how the space could be transformed, a valuable dialogue emerged about the design of their city. What if the Liesveld Viaduct were a real urban park?
That question was central to the area vision for Vlaardingen’s city center. And what better way to explore it than with a true pop-up park? On Saturday, November 25, landscape designer Nico Wissing transformed the viaduct into an enchanting urban park. It became the green eye-catcher of the city center — a place that demonstrates how livability, spatial quality, and climate adaptation can come together. Het werd de groene blikvanger van de binnenstad – een plek die laat zien hoe leefbaarheid, verblijfskwaliteit en klimaatadaptatie samenkomen.
Despite the changeable weather, a green oasis was created in just a short time. Wrapped in a lush coat of greenery, the viaduct offered a visual preview of the future and gave visitors the chance to experience that potential for themselves.
Experience and transition in city centers are key challenges for many municipalities. This project marks the beginning of a joint effort to enrich Vlaardingen’s city center — with greenery, art and culture, and the involvement of passionate local entrepreneurs.
