Drierivierenfontein

Mothership

At the confluence of three rivers and three cities — Dordrecht, Zwijndrecht, and Papendrecht — the waters merge at a place of exceptional significance: the Drierivierenpunt. Here, where the Noord, the Oude Maas, and the Beneden Merwede meet, an iconic artwork rises — one that presents water not as a boundary, but as a unifying force: the Drierivieren Fountain.

The concept, developed by Mothership on behalf of RiverArt, consists of three powerful water jets launched from the edges of the three cities toward a shared central point. Each fountain is connected to a distinctly designed waterfront platform, inviting residents and visitors alike to pause, look out over the river, and immerse themselves in the poetic interplay between water and city.

The fountain installation is interactive and responsive. The height and strength of each jet depend on the number of people present at that specific location — the more visitors, the stronger the stream. This creates a dynamic equilibrium between the three cities, made visible through water. Wind and shipping movements are monitored in real time to ensure both the safety and precision of the aquatic choreography.

The Drierivieren Fountain is more than an artwork — it is a living symbol of collaboration, connection, and shared identity. A striking, poetic landmark that visually links the Drechtsteden and gives Europe’s busiest water junction a new and inspiring face.
