Drielandschappenpunt Doesburg

Mothership

The Drielandschappenpunt is a conceptual art project developed by Mothership for the municipality of Doesburg, as part of the Achterhoek cultural program KUNSTwerkt. It aims to mark the entrance of the Beinum West business park with a striking and meaningful landmark that reinforces both the region’s identity and the quality of the public space. The project has not yet been realized.

The location has a unique quality: it is the point where three characteristic Dutch landscapes converge — the Veluwe, De Liemers, and the Achterhoek. Instead of a border between countries, this is a Drielandschappenpunt — a meeting point shaped by time, nature, and culture. Each landscape carries its own atmosphere and symbolism: the deer for the Veluwe, the flowing water for De Liemers, and the scenic patchwork of hedgerows and fields for the Achterhoek.

The proposed landmark consists of a tall, rotating column — a triple helix — composed of three colored bands, each representing one of the landscapes: purple for the heathlands (Veluwe), blue for the river network (Liemers), and green for the patchwork landscape (Achterhoek). These bands are symbolically intertwined and designed with strong visual impact.

The column will be covered with energy-generating film, making innovation literally visible. By using the optical moiré effect, continuously shifting patterns appear across its surface. At night, internal lighting creates an enchanting play of lines that enhances the experience. The solar energy generated powers the slow rotation of the column, giving the artwork a dynamic and ever-changing presence.

Around the landmark, benches will be placed that not only invite people to sit and stay but also tell the story of the Drielandschappenpunt. In this way, the site becomes a public space that informs, inspires, and connects both residents and visitors.

This artwork is intended as a visual beacon and calling card for Beinum West, designed to make the area more appealing to both businesses and residents. By producing parts of it locally, the project also strengthens community involvement. The Drielandschappenpunt combines nature, heritage, technology, and imagination — giving new meaning to a previously underused area.
