De Zeebank
De Zeebank is a striking example of what close collaboration can achieve. Situated in the city park designed by LOLA Landscape Architects, this colorful artwork occupies a prominent spot along Almere’s green Stadhuispromenade. Artist Jan van der Ploeg applied his signature visual language to the bench, infusing it with bold color combinations and a lively rhythm. The result is a place that invites people to pause, rest, and enjoy their surroundings.
For Jan van der Ploeg, this marked the largest work he had ever created. Mothership oversaw the production, project management, and overall execution of the project. The artwork serves as the starting point of the Zeegroene Loper — a Mothership vision for a greener city center in Almere. In the lead-up to the opening of the Floriade 2022 and the renewed Stadhuispromenade, several additional public art projects are set to follow, including three installations around Almere Central Station.
During installation, it quickly became clear that De Zeebank was striking a chord with the public. “So beautiful! I’m in love…”, “Speechless… I’ve rarely seen anything this stunning,” and “This work is going to have an impact, no doubt about it,” were among the first reactions from passers-by.
