Combi

Haas & Hahn, 2009

Combi, by artist duo Haas & Hahn (known for the Favela Painting project), is a traveling tribute to Brazilian popular culture. In the summer of 2009, a bright yellow VW Combi van appeared on the streets of Rotterdam — a familiar sight in Rio de Janeiro, but with a twist. This bus was transformed into a mobile multimedia center, designed in the style of the iconic vans that operate as line 75 through Rio’s Penha neighborhood.

Instead of passengers, this Combi carried stories. Those who encountered the bus were treated to film footage capturing everyday life in the Brazilian favelas. The vibrant visuals, intimate glimpses, and overall atmosphere brought a touch of Rio to Rotterdam — a city exchange on wheels.

The project was presented during the Brazil Rotterdam event and offered a human, intimate perspective on a world too often portrayed through stereotypes. By using an everyday object like the Combi van, Haas & Hahn created an accessible yet powerful statement about culture, identity, and connection.

Combi was produced by Mothership and commissioned by Rotterdam Festivals. With contributions from partners including Morel, Beamsystems, and Glimm Screens, the project became a successful cross-over between art and social engagement — both technically and conceptually.
