Carpark

Jan-Geert Munneke, 2008

During the Wereld van de Witte de With festival in 2008, Jan-Geert Munneke presented his work Carpark. This artwork featured an old car transformed into a mobile mini-park. With it, Munneke playfully and thoughtfully responded to the festival theme Green, offering a statement on urban space and environmental awareness.

Carpark quite literally brought greenery into the streets and served as a meeting place for residents and visitors alike. The installation demonstrated how easily urban spaces can be made more livable, while at the same time prompting reflection on how neighborhoods engage with investment in public space.

By shaping the park in the form of a car, Munneke played with the contrasts between mobility and stillness, hard surfaces and greenery. Mothership produced the project in collaboration with September in Rotterdam (Rotterdam Festivals).
