Brug naar Rijk der duizend eilanden

Mothership & Studio MAUC

The Bridge to the Realm of a Thousand Islands is a circular pedestrian bridge located in the Kanaalpark in the municipality of Dijk en Waard. The bridge forms both a symbolic and physical connection between Heerhugowaard and Broek op Langedijk, linking the urban embankment on the north side of the park to the historic Oosterdel area — a unique natural and horticultural landscape that is part of the Netherlands’ National Nature Network (Natuurnetwerk Nederland).

The design was created through a collaboration between Mothership and Studio Mauc (Sander Boer). The bridge draws inspiration from traditional chicken bridges and coal barges native to the region. On the Heerhugowaard side, the design appears straightforward and functional; on the Broek op Langedijk side, it becomes more narrative and layered. In this way, the bridge reflects the dual identity of the area and its residents. At the same time, it serves as both a lookout point and a place to pause, offering views over a mosaic of islands, waterways, and gardens.

Sustainability plays a key role. The structure incorporates reused materials, such as angle irons from former electricity pylons and wooden planks from old railway sleepers — subtle references to the region’s history of coal transport by boat and rail. In doing so, the bridge integrates seamlessly into the landscape in a contemporary way, making history tangible.

The design is parametrically developed, allowing flexibility in both form and placement. Because the Oosterdel area is ecologically sensitive, the bridge will be accessible to pedestrians only — in keeping with the policy of managing recreation in natural environments with care and precision.

The Bridge to the Realm of a Thousand Islands thus becomes both a poetic and functional gesture — connecting nature, heritage, technology, and community. A new link between past and future, between city and landscape.
