Breigraffiti
Knit one, purl one, pull through, and let it slip. Knitted graffiti is a soft yet powerful response to the often rough street art found in the city. In Nieuwegein, a group of volunteers — mostly seniors — secretly worked on a guerrilla knitting project for the artwork De Krul. Encouraged by artist Marly Weemen, they spent weeks knitting, crocheting, patchworking, and embroidering. On the icy night of December 1, 2010, all the knitting stars gathered to install their creation. The result: a giant, handmade woolen sweater of 40 m² for the metal sculpture — keeping it warm through the winter.
The project combined traditional craftsmanship with urban expression and was realized with the support of the Municipality of Nieuwegein and many dedicated residents, young and old. Mothership developed the concept, oversaw the participation process, and coordinated and executed the project.
