Farmer’s Family Zeeland

Ari Versluis & Ellie Uyttenbroek, 2003

In the heart of Zeeland, Ari Versluis and Ellie Uyttenbroek captured the pride of rural life in their photo series Zeeland Farming Family. Known for their striking portraits of subcultures, the duo turned their lens toward the inhabitants of the countryside. Local farming families were photographed on their own land, in their everyday surroundings, with an eye for both tradition and personal identity. The resulting images formed a powerful document of our time, portraying contemporary farming life in an honest and aesthetically compelling way. The project was realized as part of the Year of the Farm 2003.

Mothership coordinated the participation process, oversaw the curatorship, production, and project management, and ensured that the project was embraced throughout the region. Through close collaboration with the local community, the series became not only an artistic achievement but also a socially valuable reflection of farming life in transition. Zeeland Farming Family subtly captured the changing identity of the countryside, balancing authenticity with a layered approach to cultural representation.
