Being-Booth 2

Roos Versteegh, 2006

During the Wereld van de Witte de With festival in 2006, Roos Versteeg presented her installation Being-Booth2. This unique photo booth invited visitors to have a portrait taken of their “Being Self” — an exclusive photograph capturing their unconscious face. Rather than the classic smile for the camera, Versteeg sought to reveal the deeper layers of human existence in a single image.

The installation was located at the Nederlands Fotomuseum and served as a reflection on identity, representation, and the tension between how we present ourselves and who we truly are. Inside the booth, visitors became part of an almost ritualistic process, with the backs of the Polaroids displayed on a pinboard — traces of presence and anonymity at the same time.

Being-Booth2 was presented as part of September in Rotterdam, commissioned by Rotterdam Festivals. Curation and production were provided by Mothership.
