Eurovision Countdown Clock

Mothership, 2021

In the run-up to the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest, Mothership constructed an impressive installation made of scaffolding, serving as a countdown clock. Positioned next to the new Depot of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the clock counted down the days to the grand finale on May 22. The kick-off took place on February 11 — exactly 100 days before the contest — led by none other than Chantal Janzen, Edsilia Rombley, Nikkie de Jager, and Mayor Aboutaleb. Each day, the planks of the countdown clock were manually adjusted to display the remaining number of days.

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Countdown Clock became a powerful and flexible symbol of hope and connection. Every day, a different organization was invited to turn the clock – over 100 parties seized the opportunity to present themselves to the world. Wearing specially designed Eurovision scarves, they posed in front of the clock, turning a simple act into a daily PR moment that was widely shared on social media and featured in promotional campaigns.

The Countdown Clock was more than just a clock; it was a visual reminder of what was to come, and a celebration of collaboration and resilience. Mothership developed the concept, facilitated the participation process, and was responsible for both the design and execution.
