A Blissful Picknick
During the Kunstvlaai 2008 art fair in Amsterdam, performance group BLISS presented A BLISSful Picnic — a sensory, theatrical experience with an unexpected twist. The performers wore enormous checkered skirts that unfolded into picnic blankets, upon which a festive picnic was served — complete with champagne, strawberries, and other delicacies. Visitors were invited to join in and become part of this intimate and playful performance.
The first performance took place on The Flying Grass Carpet at the Westergas site in Amsterdam. This monumental temporary artwork, developed by HUNK-design and ID Eddy, resembles a giant, cheerful green picnic blanket and transforms any urban space into an accessible and inviting place.
Following its success, the performance was later restaged on The Flying Grass Carpet at Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam. There too, A BLISSful Picnic introduced a surprising sense of softness, beauty, and connection into the public realm.
This performance was curated and produced by Mothership, playfully demonstrating how art, theatre, and the city can seamlessly merge.
