174 Landenpunt
On the West-Kruiskade — one of the most diverse streets in the Netherlands, home to 174 nationalities — 174 Landenpunt playfully and accessibly showcased the neighborhood’s cultural richness. The temporary artwork served as a joyful, graphic intervention in public space, celebrating recognition, pride, and connection.
At the intersection with Kruisplein, a distinctive, gently curved white signpost appeared. This sculpture — referencing the 174 Landenpunt — quickly became a much-loved talking point in the neighborhood. The signs displayed playful and imaginative directions such as “All Tones,” “Crusiekade,” and “Truly Rotterdam” — witty references that highlighted the street’s unique identity and character.
Mothership was responsible for the entire process — from concept and curatorship to community engagement, production, and project management. By actively involving local residents in collecting symbols, stories, and visual references, the artwork was shaped and supported by the community itself. This approach resulted in a piece that not only enriched the physical space, but also contributed to the ongoing conversation about who we are — as a street, and as a city.
174 Landenpunt demonstrated how art — with both a playful tone and a deeper meaning — can move people, both literally and figuratively. It showed that culture can also be celebrated with color, humor, and recognition — right there on the sidewalk.
