With 15m³, artist Gabriel Lester plays a subtle game between function and imagination. In the Roombeek district of Enschede, he placed two seemingly ordinary electrical substations — brick-built, closed, purely functional. But a closer look reveals art disguised as infrastructure.
One structure is perforated with periscope-like openings that, through a series of mirrors, offer new perspectives on the surroundings. The other, located near the former fireworks factory, almost disappears into its environment through reflective joints between the bricks.
Mothership was responsible for the production and project management of this project. Commissioned by the Municipality of Enschede and initiated by art space TETEM, 15m³ transforms a utilitarian object into an experience of wonder — a quiet intervention that invites passers-by to look, reflect, and see anew.
