Roman Triumphal Arch Becomes Landmark for Innovative Water Storage System

The Triumphal Arch at Aarplein in Alphen aan den Rijn was officially unveiled as a new public landmark that combines cultural heritage with climate adaptation. Developed by Mothership in collaboration with the Municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn, the installation transforms an innovative water management system into a striking work of public space design.

At the heart of the project is a visible water column connected to an advanced rainwater storage system. Rainwater is collected and pumped deep underground, helping to prevent flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. During dry spells, the stored water can be pumped back up and used to irrigate trees and planting throughout the area.

The project forms part of GreenLED, an initiative that brings together innovative solutions for climate resilience and healthy urban environments. Integrated into the Triumphal Arch is a water management solution for collecting, storing and reusing rainwater. The visible BlueTube element is part of the larger BlueBloqs system, making otherwise hidden infrastructure accessible and understandable to the public.

The design creates a natural connection between past and future. The flowing water references the Roman history of the region and recalls the River Rhine’s role as the northern frontier of the Roman Empire and a key part of the limes. In doing so, the installation makes the area’s historical identity tangible while addressing contemporary environmental challenges.

With the completion of the Triumphal Arch, this chapter of the city’s Roman heritage has once again become visible in the urban landscape. A future phase will see the realization of an aqueduct, further bringing the story of the limes to life. Together with the Municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn, Mothership has used the limes as a cultural and historical framework—a treasure map that reveals new connections between the city’s past, present and future.
