Rotterdam. Make It Happen

Collin van der Sluijs, 2018

In 2018, Collin van der Sluijs painted an enchanting mural on the façade of the former Baja Beach Club on Aert van Nesstraat, in the heart of Rotterdam. This work is part of the urban art series Make It Happen, in which artists are invited to enrich the cityscape with interactive art.

Van der Sluijs’ mural depicts a dreamlike world filled with flowers and birds, with a large swing taking the visual lead. Visitors can actually sit on a real swing installed in front of the painting, literally becoming part of the artwork. This playful and poetic element invites interaction, reflection — and, of course, the taking of a photo.

The mural offers a moment of stillness amid the city’s bustle, emphasizing the human scale within the urban environment. Commissioned by the Municipality of Rotterdam, Mothership developed the concept, oversaw execution and project management, and acted as curator of the entire project.
