Vlaggenparade Rotterdam Unlimited

Emma van Beek & Nataša Heydra, 2014

It doesn’t get more colorful than this.

During Rotterdam Unlimited 2014, the city temporarily gained a new skyline: a flag parade celebrating Rotterdam’s cultural diversity. More than two hundred flags adorned the city center — each representing a different culture, community, or story that contributes to the richness of the city.

The flags proudly waved along the Boompjes, Blaak, and Coolsingel, forming a dynamic artwork in motion — a celebration of recognition for many, and at the same time, an invitation to discover the unfamiliar.

Commissioned by Dunya Festival, Zomercarnaval, and Rotterdam Festivals, Mothership curated and produced this temporary intervention — a tribute to the city where everyone belongs, no matter which flag you fly.
