The Flying Grass Carpet
The Flying Grass Carpet is a monumental artwork in the form of a giant Persian rug — but made entirely of artificial grass in various colors and textures. Designed by HUNK-design and Studio ID Eddy, it had its world premiere in 2008 at the Kunstvlaai in Amsterdam.
The colorful carpet, measuring 32 by 58 meters, provides space for all kinds of activities — from picnics and open-air cinemas to sports and performances. With its cheerful appearance and inviting character, it temporarily transforms any urban square into a vibrant green meeting place. The carpet combines familiar visual motifs with unexpected materials, encouraging residents and visitors alike to see the city from a fresh perspective.
After traveling the world, The Flying Grass Carpet finally landed permanently at Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam. There, it remains a beloved spot for relaxation, play, and events — a colorful icon in the heart of the city. Mothership was responsible for concept development, the participation process, and project management.
