Stad op Waterspiegel
As part of the Zeegroene Loper — the art route connecting Almere from the train station to the Weerwater — the city gained a striking light artwork by artist Iwan Smit in 2023. Titled Stad op Waterspiegel (City on Water’s Surface), the piece is located in the passage between the bus station and Stationsplein, bringing the story of Almere to life through a colorful and layered visual language.
Commissioned by the Kroonenberg Groep and in collaboration with the Municipality of Almere, Mothership was appointed as curator, producer, and project manager. Mothership oversaw the entire process, ensuring that the artwork was not only visually compelling but also seamlessly aligned with the city’s ambitions and the experiential quality of the location.
With themes such as water, growth, and identity, and references to the city’s skyline, football culture, and Ally the Monkey, Stad op Waterspiegel is an artwork that invites viewers to look, explore, and experience the city anew — a visual ode to Almere.
