Spotlights On

Mothership, 2022

To commemorate the St. Elisabeth’s Flood, which swept over Dordrecht more than six hundred years ago, Mothership created a powerful and poetic light project. For nearly a week, four bridges and the Drierivierenpunt were transformed by a mesmerizing light spectacle that illuminated the connection, history, and identity of the region.

Mothership conceived the concept, designed the light compositions, led an extensive participation process, and was responsible for the project’s execution and management.

At the Drierivierenpunt, beams of light symbolized the collaboration between the Drechtsteden: first light in Dordrecht, then in Papendrecht and Zwijndrecht — until a luminous dance emerged between the riverbanks. The Merwedebrug was given wings as a tribute to Papendrecht’s aviation history, while the Zwijndrecht Bridge reflected the rhythmic motion of the region’s inland waterways. The Bridge over the Noord symbolized the cradle of Kinderdijk, gently rocking on the water. On the Baanhoek Bridge, light was used to depict the relocation of Sliedrecht after the flood — from one riverbank to the other.
