Somewhere Nice

From Kralingse Zoom, a tunnel runs beneath the A16, connecting Rotterdam and Capelle aan den IJssel for pedestrians, cyclists, and an unmanned electric shuttle bus. The underpass had long been perceived as unsafe and unwelcoming. Commissioned by the Municipality of Rotterdam, in collaboration with the Municipality of Capelle aan den IJssel, Mothership was tasked with creating a more pleasant atmosphere.
Artist Bruce Tsai Meu Chong designed a mural featuring characteristic elements from both municipalities on opposite sides. At the center of the composition are motifs inspired by a workshop Bruce conducted with schoolchildren from the Capelle neighborhood Fascinatio. Thanks to the colorful artwork and improved lighting, the tunnel has become a more inviting and safer passageway.
For this project, Mothership oversaw the participation process, execution, project management, and curatorship.
