Samen Smeden

Freerk Wieringa, 2011

In the heart of Nieuwegein, the fire was quite literally stoked for the art project Samen Smeden (Forging Together). Led by artist Freerk Wieringa, residents were invited to take part in workshops where they collaboratively forged a monumental steel artwork. This took place in a temporary blacksmith’s workshop, set up as both a meeting place and a workspace.

The initiative was part of a series of cultural activities surrounding the redevelopment of Nieuwegein’s city center. Children aged 10 to 12 were invited to actively participate in the creation of the artwork, under adult supervision. The finished piece was destined for a prominent location in the city — for instance, in the new City Hall.

Wieringa’s work is a powerful blend of modern and traditional techniques. He is known for his robust, mechanical sculptures that often reference icons from pop culture. For Samen Smeden, he combined his distinctive style with the energy of Nieuwegein’s youth and residents. The result: a work of art by and for the city — forged in fire and rooted in connection. Mothership developed the concept, acted as curator, and was responsible for project management and execution.
